Gateway Gardens Greensboro: The Free Botanical Garden You Need to Visit (2026 Guide)
Tucked just off East Gate City Boulevard, Gateway Gardens is one of Greensboro’s most distinctive public green spaces — and one that many locals don’t even realize exists. Free to visit, open year-round, and spread across 11 stunning acres, it’s the kind of place that surprises you the first time you visit and keeps you coming back.
A partnership between the City of Greensboro and Greensboro Beautiful, Gateway Gardens is described as “a playful and interactive garden, and a horticultural oasis integrating elements of history, movement, discovery, art, and community.” It’s the biggest project in Greensboro Beautiful’s 50-year history and represents a genuinely remarkable addition to the Gate City’s outdoor offerings.
What’s at Gateway Gardens
Michel Family Children’s Garden
An interactive garden designed specifically for kids, where young visitors can explore how food is planted and grown through hands-on learning that blends education with outdoor fun. One of the standout features of the entire park and a wonderful reason to bring the family.
Heritage Garden
Showcases plants and features that reflect the history and heritage of the Greensboro region. A beautiful, thoughtfully curated section of the garden that gives the space its sense of place.
Rain Garden
A sustainable stormwater management feature that doubles as a beautiful garden space — a great example of Greensboro Beautiful’s commitment to ecology and environmental stewardship.
Gateway Plaza & Icon
The welcoming entry point to the garden, designed as a stunning entryway into the space and into the City of Greensboro itself. Strategically located just off Business I-40 and I-85 (Exit 124), making it one of the city’s most visible green spaces.
William A. Stern Maze
A fun and playful hedge maze that adults and kids alike enjoy navigating. One of the more unique features in any Greensboro park.
Joseph M. Bryan Foundation Water Sculpture
A striking water sculpture installation that adds a distinctive artistic element to the garden landscape. A great spot for photos.
The Great Lawn
A large, open grassy field perfect for picnics, outdoor events, and simply stretching out on a warm afternoon. Can accommodate up to 500 guests for special events, with electricity available.
Blue Stone Patio
A beautiful 1,800-square-foot patio area behind the Visitor Center. Can accommodate up to 100 guests for events and serves as one of the best outdoor event spaces in Greensboro.
Gateway Gardens Event Center
Located inside the garden, the upscale Visitors Center can host intimate weddings, receptions, corporate events, and private parties for up to 75 guests (50 seated). Features a multi-purpose room, conference room, catering kitchen, and covered patio with outdoor seating. Vendors and caterers of your choice are welcome. Open for rentals 8 AM–midnight, 7 days a week.
Future phases of Gateway Gardens will include a Japanese Garden, White Oak Forest, and a dedicated Wedding & Special Events Garden.
